To say further, Dr. Atasi is a Dancer, Choreographer, Traditional Painter, Yoga Instructor, Wellness Coach, Cosmetologist and Managing Director at Kala Kalp Sanskrutik Sansthan. Let’s learn more about her background, inspiring journey so far and her advice for our growing community!

Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Dr. Atasi:

Could you please talk us through your background and your journey?

My journey began far from the bright lights of cities and cultural institutions—in a remote jungle village in South Odisha, a small settlement of barely thirty houses surrounded by dense forests and deeply rooted traditional beliefs. In a society where the birth of a girl child was often discouraged, my story began in circumstances that could easily have limited my opportunities.

I was born into a traditional Brahmin family, but I was fortunate to have parents who strongly believed in education, creativity, and independence. They nurtured my confidence and encouraged me to grow beyond social limitations. From a very young age, I developed a deep interest in Indian culture and became sensitive to social issues, especially those affecting women.

Alongside my formal education, I began learning Odissi and folk dance. My mother also introduced me to art and painting, which helped shape my creative instincts. A major turning point in my life came through my father’s professional postings, which exposed me to larger cities and culturally vibrant environments. This gave me the opportunity to train under renowned Gurus and gain broader artistic exposure.

At the age of eight, my dedication was recognized nationally when I secured First Position at the All-India Performing Arts Competition in Prayagraj, organized by the Ministry of Culture. This achievement opened the doors to many state and national performances and laid the foundation for my lifelong journey in the arts.

Trained under the revered Guru–Shishya Parampara, Odissi gradually became my spiritual and expressive medium. Over the years, dance evolved into a powerful language through which I could express devotion, emotion, and storytelling. I have had the privilege of performing across India and internationally, sharing the rich cultural heritage of Odisha and India with audiences around the world.

My work has been recognized with several honors, including the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Award, Nrutya Shiromani Award, Guru Debaprasad Das Award from the Department of Language and Culture, Women Entrepreneurs Award by Women’s Era, Dynamic Achiever Award by The Times of India, and the Emerging Writer Award for my book Papular Loaner.

Alongside my artistic journey, I built a professional career in cosmetology and beauty sciences, a field in which I have more than 25 years of experience. As a global representative of India in cosmetology, I have always focused not only on professional excellence but also on empowerment. Through structured training programs, I have trained over 50,000 women, helping them achieve financial independence, professional skills, and self-confidence.

Another unique chapter in my journey came when I was recognized as Runner-Up at Miss India 2021 under the Fashion and Lifestyle Council. For me, this experience symbolized that confidence, grace, and purpose can exist together beyond conventional definitions of beauty.

Academically and creatively, I have continued to grow throughout my life. I earned a Graduate Degree in Hindustani Vocal Music, received an Honorary Doctorate in Painting and Performing Arts, and explored multiple forms of creative expression as a classical dancer, fine artist, traditional painter, author, and cultural advocate.

Originally from South Odisha and now based in Delhi, I continue to work toward my vision of a world connected through culture, dignity, and mutual respect. My journey has never been only about personal success—it has always been about preserving cultural heritage, empowering others, and creating meaningful impact through art and knowledge.

How did you discover your passion?

For me, the discovery of passion began with a quiet moment of realization.

It can happen in many ways—while watching a mesmerizing performance, witnessing the powerful abhinaya of a Guru, or listening to classical music that touches the deepest part of the heart. Sometimes it begins the very first time you tie the ghungroo and feel their sacred significance.

Over time, dance becomes much more than movement. For me, it became a language of emotion and storytelling. In classical traditions like Odissi and Bharatanatyam, dance is also a spiritual offering.

When practice leaves my body tired but my mind peaceful and fulfilled, I know that dance is not just a discipline for me—it is truly a calling.

Who has been the biggest source of motivation in your daily life?

My greatest motivation comes from the guidance and blessings of my Gurus. Their teachings remind me that sincere effort and dedication are themselves forms of devotion.

I believe that every step taken with humility and purpose has meaning. Even during difficult moments, the thought that my work can create value for others keeps me moving forward.

The discipline and wisdom I have received from my mentors continue to inspire and guide my journey every day.

What strategies have helped you grow as a person?

For me, honesty, discipline, and dedication have been the foundation of personal and professional growth.

I believe it is important to remain grounded while continuing to learn and evolve. At the same time, I feel it is equally important to contribute to the larger ecosystem—by sharing knowledge, nurturing emerging talent, and supporting cultural traditions.

Growth becomes truly meaningful when it is connected not only to personal development but also to the well-being of the community.

In your opinion, what are the keys to success?

I believe the key to success lies in clarity of purpose, consistent effort, and continuous learning.

Staying rooted in tradition while remaining open to innovation helps sustain both artistic and professional growth. Strong mentorship, collaboration, and integrity are also essential in building a meaningful and lasting career.

For me, success becomes truly fulfilling when talent is aligned with values, purpose, and service.

What advice would you like to give to our readers?

My advice to readers would be to believe deeply in your journey, even when the path feels uncertain or challenging. Do not allow societal expectations or external judgments to define your dreams.

Success requires discipline, humility, and perseverance. Talent alone is not enough—continuous learning and sincere effort are equally important.

Respect your roots and cultural heritage while remaining open to new ideas and opportunities. Most importantly, use your achievements to uplift others, especially those who may not have the same opportunities.

When passion is guided by compassion and purpose, success becomes truly meaningful and enduring.
