At Brilliant Read Media, it is our constant endeavour to identify and share some of the unique and compelling stories from the startup ecosystem. As part of this, we invited Dr. Kanika Arora for an interview with Brilliant Read Media. To say further, Dr. Kanika is an Entrepreneur and Founder & Managing Partner at Nirka Law Advisory. Let’s learn more about her background, inspiring journey so far and her advice for our growing community!
Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Dr. Kanika:
Could you please talk us through your background and your journey?
Brought up in the Middle East, my academic study with law began at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, whereby I completed my LL.B and LL.M. in Oil & Gas Law. That gave me the right footing to proceed with specialising in construction & infrastructure disputes, and had the perfect start to my start practice with my mentor, Mr. Hiroo Advani in Mumbai.
After spending my formative years of practice in Mumbai, I was then parachuted to Delhi to head the firm’s Delhi office. Retaining that position for a few years, I also simultaneously completed my Doctorate in Business Administration from SSBM Geneva.
I now head my own firm by the name of Nirka Law Advisory, which has two offices in New Delhi – Green Park and Vasant Vihar. The firm continues to retain the specialisation of construction & infrastructure disputes.
‘Nirka Law Advisory’ is such a unique name; talk us through more about it, please. Our audience would also love to know what kind of problem you are solving?
‘Nirka’ means prosperity. Our objective was to introduce a specialised law firm for the infrastructure & construction industries, as unlike other sectors, these sectors involve complex & technical projects, high value stakes, a number of interdependent issues involving governmental policies and regulations.
Despite the challenges, what keeps you going when things get tough?
There is no growth without hustle, especially in the practice of law. Consistency is key. It takes time and a lot of hard work to get your way through, but being persistent is the only solution.
One thing that I have learned is getting yourself the right mentor in your formative years of being a legal professional – a right mentor’s impact will stay for the rest of the professional journey in ways beyond contemplation.

What are the three most important lessons you have learned in your life?
1) Nothing can replace hard work
2) Showing up every day, no matter what
3) Persistence is the key
In your opinion, what are the keys to success?
a) Your network is your net worth
b) Steady, slow growth is better than temporary fast growth
c) Be a listener
What advice would you give students and young professionals who want to have a successful career?
> Practical experience is as important as academic learning
> There is no substitute for hard work
> Gather as much learning as you can in every case, every meeting and every opportunity
> Wear horse blinders for the first 5 years
Last but not least, what about your journey makes it satisfying/exciting?
i) My clients are happy with our work
ii) My team is satisfied with their work and the culture at our office
iii) Exciting projects
iv) To contribute to the fraternity of law in a specialised way
