At Brilliant Read Media, it is our constant endeavour to identify and share some of the unique and compelling stories from the startup ecosystem. As part of this, we invited Ayona Singha Sarkar for an interview with Brilliant Read Media. To say it further, Ayona is a Certified Personal Stylist and Founder at Style Solutions by Ayona. Let’s learn more about her background, inspiring journey so far and her advice for our growing community!
Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Ayona:
Your journey into personal styling wasn’t a conventional one. What inspired you to transition from a career in technology to building Style Solutions by Ayona?
People often assume my journey was about changing careers, but for me, it was about finding work that felt more meaningful.
I spent several years working in technology and living abroad, where I was exposed to different cultures and diverse ways of expressing personal style. What struck me most was that the most confident people weren’t necessarily the ones wearing the most expensive clothes; they were simply comfortable being themselves.
Later, after becoming a mother, I realised how valuable it is to have a wardrobe that supports your life instead of adding to your daily mental load. That experience inspired me to pursue professional training, become a certified personal stylist, and eventually launch Style Solutions by Ayona.
Today, my mission is simple: to help women feel confident by making style practical, intentional, and deeply personal.
You often talk about ‘intentional style’ rather than simply following trends. What does intentional style mean to you?
I often ask people one question: “Why did you buy this?” Most smile and say, “Because I liked it.” There’s nothing wrong with that, but liking a piece isn’t the same as needing it.
Intentional style means every item in your wardrobe has a purpose. It fits your lifestyle, works with other pieces you own, and makes you feel like yourself. When you start dressing intentionally, you stop chasing trends and begin making better decisions.
For me, style isn’t about owning more. It’s about choosing with purpose.
Fashion trends change every season. How do you help people discover a style that truly feels like their own?
Trends are wonderful; they can inspire creativity, but they shouldn’t become our identity.
Before discussing clothes, I focus on understanding the person behind the wardrobe: their lifestyle, aspirations, personality, and the image they want to project. Personal style isn’t created by copying someone else; it’s discovered by understanding yourself.
Once that foundation is clear, every style choice becomes far more authentic and meaningful.
Every client has a different lifestyle, personality, and body type. How do you create a wardrobe that’s both stylish and practical?
A wardrobe should work for your real life, not an imaginary version of it.
I begin by assessing what a client already owns before recommending anything new. Then I focus on fit, body proportions, colour harmony, and versatility, ensuring that every piece works well with others.
The goal is to create more outfit combinations from fewer, carefully selected pieces, making getting dressed simpler and more enjoyable every day.
People often think personal styling is only about looking better. Do you think its biggest impact goes deeper than appearance?
Absolutely. The biggest transformation isn’t visual; it’s emotional. When someone opens their wardrobe without feeling overwhelmed, they’re experiencing clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
Personal styling isn’t about changing who you are; it’s about removing confusion so you can show up as your authentic self with confidence.
Many people have wardrobes full of clothes yet still feel they have ‘nothing to wear.’ Why does this happen?
Most wardrobes are built one purchase at a time without an overall plan.
People often buy individual items they love, but those pieces don’t necessarily work together. I encourage clients to think of their wardrobe as a complete system where every item complements the others.
A well-planned wardrobe should reduce decision fatigue, not create it.
Many styling guides recommend the same wardrobe staples for everyone. Do you believe there’s such a thing as a universal wardrobe?
Honestly, I don’t.
The best wardrobe is built around your lifestyle, profession, climate, personality, and daily routine, not a generic checklist of “must-have” items.
Instead of asking, “What should everyone own?” I encourage people to ask, “What do I genuinely wear, enjoy wearing, and feel confident in?” That’s where personal style truly begins.
How do you balance timeless elegance with changing fashion trends?
I see trends as accents rather than foundations.
I encourage clients to build their wardrobes around timeless, versatile pieces that remain relevant year after year. Trends can then be added thoughtfully when they genuinely complement a person’s personality and lifestyle.
Fashion changes constantly. Good style simply evolves.
Personal branding has become increasingly important. How can professionals and entrepreneurs use style to make a lasting first impression?
Whether we realise it or not, our appearance communicates before we speak.
The way we dress quietly conveys confidence, professionalism, credibility, and attention to detail. When professionals dress intentionally and consistently, their appearance reinforces the message they want others to remember.
Personal style isn’t about perfection; it’s about alignment between who you are and how you present yourself.
Looking ahead, what’s your vision for Style Solutions by Ayona, and what message would you like to share with women who are still discovering their authentic style?
My vision is to build Style Solutions by Ayona into a trusted styling brand that helps women see clothing differently, not as something to impress others, but as a tool for confidence, self-expression, and everyday ease.
To every woman still discovering her authentic style, I want to say this:
You don’t need a bigger wardrobe. You don’t need to chase every trend. And you certainly don’t need to become someone else to be stylish.
You simply need to understand yourself a little better.
Because the most beautiful style you’ll ever wear is the one that genuinely feels like you.
