An Ayurveda doctor, entrepreneur and founder of Blumen Organics, Dr. Neha Sharma is reimagining Ayurvedic skincare for the modern consumer. Drawing from her healthcare background and deep-rooted understanding of Ayurveda, she brings together traditional wisdom, thoughtfully selected ingredients and contemporary formulation practices to create skincare that is conscious, purposeful and relevant.
In this conversation, Dr. Neha takes us behind the journey of Blumen Organics from the inspiration that sparked the idea to her philosophy on clean beauty, the intersection of Ayurveda and modern science, the realities of building a purpose-driven brand, and her vision of taking authentic Ayurvedic skincare to a global audience.
Let’s learn more about her journey, entrepreneurial insights and the lessons she has gathered along the way.
Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Dr. Neha:
You’re building a premium Ayurvedic skincare brand at the intersection of tradition and modern formulation science. What gap did you see in the beauty industry that made you believe Blumen Organics needed to exist?
For me, the idea behind Blumen Organics started with a very personal concern.
As an Ayurveda doctor, I have always been interested in herbs and their role in skincare. I was also using different skincare products myself, but I often felt that the results were not always as expected. When I started looking more closely at the products and their ingredients, I realised that the quality and sourcing of some of the raw materials used in skincare could be a genuine concern.
At the same time, I realised that I had something valuable to bring to this space. As an Ayurveda doctor, I have an understanding of skin health, Ayurvedic herbs, their properties and how they have traditionally been used to support the skin.
That made me think: why not use this knowledge to create skincare that is more thoughtfully formulated while staying true to the principles of Ayurveda?
That became the starting point for Blumen Organics. I wanted to create products where Ayurvedic knowledge was not simply used as a marketing concept, but was genuinely part of the product philosophy.
For me, Blumen Organics is an opportunity to bring authentic Ayurvedic knowledge, good-quality ingredients and modern skincare expectations together and offer people solutions that I can genuinely believe in and recommend.
Ayurveda has thousands of years of knowledge, while modern skincare is increasingly driven by clinical evidence and active ingredients. How do you balance Ayurvedic principles with contemporary scientific expectations without compromising either?
I believe Ayurveda may be ancient, but it is certainly not outdated. It has stood the test of time because many of its principles remain relevant to our lives today.
Ayurveda has given us a comprehensive understanding of health, not only medicines, but also skin health, signs and symptoms of diseases, daily and seasonal routines, diet, exercise, yoga and preventive care. What I find particularly interesting is that many of these principles, described centuries ago, are now being explored and understood through modern scientific research.
So, for me, the question is not whether we should choose Ayurveda or modern science. It is about understanding how the two can work together.
At Blumen Organics, we respect traditional Ayurvedic knowledge while also applying modern thinking to ingredient quality, formulation, safety and consumer expectations.
For example, Kumkumadi Tailam is a beautiful example of how traditional Ayurvedic knowledge can remain relevant today. Our formulation follows the traditional Ksheerapaka method, where the ingredients are processed carefully using milk to prepare the formulation. This is not a concept created for today’s market; it is an authentic Ayurvedic approach that has traditionally been used for skincare and rejuvenation.
At the same time, today’s consumer may be looking for solutions to concerns such as uneven skin tone, pigmentation, dryness or loss of radiance. We therefore want to present traditional formulations in a way that is easy for the modern consumer to understand and incorporate into their skincare routine.
I see modern science as a way of exploring, understanding and supporting the wisdom of Ayurveda, not replacing it.
That is the philosophy behind Blumen Organics: taking knowledge that has been passed down through generations and bringing it into today’s world with the same respect, professionalism and responsibility that we would expect from any modern skincare brand.
You emphasise “clean, conscious and caring” skincare. In an industry where clean beauty has become a powerful marketing term, what does “clean” genuinely mean to you?
For us, “clean” is not simply a word we use for branding. It is a principle that we try to follow throughout the way we develop our products.
For me, clean skincare begins with being thoughtful about what we put into the formulation. We carefully select our ingredients and avoid ingredients that we believe are unnecessary or potentially harmful to the skin. Every ingredient should have a reason for being there and should contribute to what the product is designed to do.
The quality and source of the raw materials are equally important. When we work with Ayurvedic herbs and other natural ingredients, we want them to come from authentic and reliable sources, with proper quality control and without adulteration.
In Ayurveda, the quality of the raw material is extremely important because the effectiveness of a formulation depends not only on the recipe, but also on the quality of the ingredients used.
We also believe that choosing fewer or better-understood ingredients is not enough by itself. The formulation as a whole needs to work properly. Ingredients have to be selected in the right combination and formulated carefully so that the final product is stable, safe and able to deliver its intended purpose.
This is where my background as an Ayurveda doctor becomes particularly important to me. I can look at ingredients not simply as trends, but from the perspective of their traditional properties, their purpose in skincare and how they fit into an overall formulation philosophy.
So when we say “clean, conscious and caring,” we mean that these principles should be visible behind the product, not just on the label.
From the selection and sourcing of raw materials to formulation and quality, we want every step to reflect the same level of care.
As an Ayurveda doctor and entrepreneur, how has your medical understanding influenced the way you approach product formulation, ingredient selection, safety and long-term skin health?
My medical background has a very strong influence on the way I think about skincare.
As an Ayurveda doctor, I don’t look at the skin only from the perspective of appearance. I look at it as an organ that reflects overall health and also needs to maintain its own balance and protective function.
When I select an ingredient, I don’t simply ask, “Is this ingredient popular?” I ask why it is needed, what its intended function is, how it has traditionally been used, what evidence exists around it, and whether it is appropriate and safe for the skin.
Ayurveda has a detailed understanding of skin, including different skin conditions, their characteristics and the importance of maintaining balance rather than constantly treating visible symptoms. This encourages me to think about skincare from a long-term perspective.
Supporting the skin barrier, maintaining hydration and protecting the skin from environmental stress can be just as important as addressing a particular cosmetic concern.
My approach to safety has also been influenced by my professional experience in the regulated medical-device field. It has taught me to think systematically about quality, risk, evidence, consistency and traceability. I carry the same mindset into skincare.
So, when developing a product, I try to bring together three things: the traditional knowledge of Ayurveda, modern understanding of skin biology and responsible formulation practices.
For me, good skincare should not simply make the skin look better temporarily. It should be thoughtfully designed to support the skin over time while being safe, consistent and honest about what it can achieve.
That is the standard I want to apply to Blumen Organics not only as an entrepreneur, but first and foremost as a doctor.
Consumers today want visible, often immediate results. Ayurveda traditionally focuses on balance and long-term wellness. How do you communicate the value of a more holistic approach to someone expecting instant transformation?
I personally believe that skincare should not be about simply following whatever happens to be trending. Trends come and go, but your skin needs consistency, understanding and the right routine.
Of course, as consumers, we all like to see results quickly. But healthy skin is not something that can always be transformed overnight by using the latest trending ingredient or product. Skin is a living organ, and meaningful changes often require time, consistency and the right care.
For me, Ayurveda has always been about looking at the bigger picture, understanding the skin, maintaining its balance and caring for it consistently rather than constantly trying to correct it with a new product.
At Blumen Organics, we therefore try to encourage consumers to build a skincare routine that is right for their skin and their individual concerns, rather than simply choosing a product because it is popular.
I also believe that skincare is closely connected with confidence. When you understand your skin and take care of it properly, you begin to feel more comfortable and confident in it. That is much more meaningful than chasing an unrealistic idea of perfection.
We may not promise an instant transformation, but we believe in something more sustainable: when you give your skin the right, thoughtful care consistently, your skin will thank you for it.
Building a skincare brand involves much more than creating good products from sourcing and quality control to distribution and consumer education. What has been the most challenging part of turning your formulation philosophy into a scalable business?
I think the most challenging part has been turning a very personal and quality-driven approach into something that can grow as a business without losing its original philosophy.
When you start with an idea, you naturally focus on the product, finding the right ingredients, developing the formulation and making sure it delivers what you want it to. But as you start building a brand, you realise that there are many more layers involved.
For an Ayurvedic skincare brand, sourcing is particularly important. We want good-quality raw materials from reliable and authentic sources, and we need consistency from one batch to another.
Then there is formulation, testing, manufacturing, packaging, regulatory compliance, quality control and, of course, making the product accessible to consumers.
Another major challenge is education. Ayurveda has a very rich and detailed knowledge system, but not every consumer is familiar with it. We have to explain the philosophy and the role of Ayurvedic ingredients in a simple, modern way without oversimplifying or making exaggerated claims.
Scaling also means making sure that the standards I expect as a doctor can be maintained as the brand grows. I don’t want growth to come at the cost of quality or authenticity.
So, for me, the biggest challenge and also the most rewarding part is finding the right balance between remaining true to our roots while building a professional, modern and scalable skincare brand.
I believe that if we can grow without losing that original commitment to quality and trust, then we are building something meaningful for the long term.
Looking ahead, what do you want Blumen Organics to stand for five years from now, and what would make you feel that you have genuinely changed the way people think about Ayurvedic skincare?
As an Ayurveda doctor, my vision is that people should not have to choose between traditional wisdom and modern skincare. I want them to understand that Ayurveda has a valuable place in today’s world when it is approached with knowledge, responsibility and professionalism.
I would like Blumen Organics to become a brand where people know that there is genuine Ayurvedic thinking behind the products, not simply an Ayurvedic name or a traditional ingredient added for marketing.
At the same time, I want the brand to meet the expectations of today’s consumer in terms of quality, formulation, safety and transparency.
As an entrepreneur, I also want to build Blumen Organics into a brand that can take this philosophy beyond India and introduce Ayurvedic skincare to a much wider, international audience.
But the real measure of success for me would be a change in perception.
If, five years from now, someone thinks of Ayurvedic skincare and doesn’t immediately associate it with something old-fashioned or purely traditional, but instead thinks of it as credible, thoughtfully formulated and relevant to modern life, I would feel that we have achieved something meaningful.
I don’t want Blumen Organics simply to follow the growth of Ayurvedic beauty. I want it to contribute to its evolution.
My hope is that we can take the wisdom that has been passed down for generations, respect its roots, understand it through a modern lens and make it accessible to the next generation.
For me, that would be the real success: not just building a successful brand, but helping people see Ayurveda in a new light.
