With over a decade of experience in the IT industry, Karishma took a bold step from the corporate world into personal styling. Her journey reflects the power of reinvention, self-belief and the understanding that personal style is not merely about fashion; it is about identity, confidence and authentic self-expression. Let’s learn more about her inspiring journey, teaching philosophy, and valuable insights.
Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Karishma:
Your journey spans over a decade in the corporate world and now personal styling. What inspired you to become a certified personal stylist, and how did Style Blueprint by Karishma begin?
My journey has been a bit of a roller coaster. I come from a corporate background and spent over 10 years in the IT industry, but I was always drawn towards fashion and styling, not just the world of trends and magazines, but the way clothes can influence how we feel about ourselves.
There was a phase in my life when I was struggling with my own confidence and questioning where I was headed. That’s when I took a leap of faith and enrolled in a personal styling course. What started as an interest in fashion turned into something much more meaningful.
I discovered how personal style can become a powerful form of self-expression and how dressing in a way that feels authentic can shift not just how others see you, but how you see yourself.
That experience became the foundation for Style Blueprint by Karishma. For me, personal styling isn’t about simply telling women what to wear or asking them to follow trends. It’s about helping them understand their own style, build confidence and feel more like themselves.
I see every styling journey as an identity journey, and that is what inspires me to help more women experience that transformation.
What does “personal style” truly mean to you, and why do you believe it is an essential part of building confidence and self-expression?
To me, personal style is about how confidently and comfortably you express yourself through what you wear. It’s a form of communication where you often tell people something about yourself before you even say a word.
I believe what we wear can influence how we feel, how we carry ourselves and how we show up in the world.
Personal style isn’t about dressing like a model or celebrity, or following every trend. It’s about understanding what feels authentic to you and building a style that reflects your personality.
When you understand what you wear and why you wear it, getting dressed becomes more than putting an outfit together; it becomes a way of expressing who you are and showing up with confidence.
How do you help clients discover a style that aligns with their personality, lifestyle, body type and professional goals?
I believe discovering your personal style is much more than choosing clothes that look good on you. It starts with understanding the person behind the clothes what they value, their lifestyle, their comfort, their aspirations and how they want to show up in their personal and professional life.
My approach is therefore quite holistic. I look at everything from body shape and fit to lifestyle, personal preferences and the challenges or insecurities a client may have around getting dressed.
We then look at their existing wardrobe, identify what is working and what isn’t, and build a wardrobe that feels practical, authentic and aligned with where they want to go.
For me, it’s not simply about shopping or adding more clothes; it’s about creating a style that genuinely reflects who they are and who they are becoming.
What are some of the most common wardrobe or styling mistakes you notice, and what practical advice would you give to help people dress more confidently?
One of the most common mistakes I see is buying clothes based on what we see online, without considering whether they actually suit our body shape, lifestyle, comfort or personal style.
This often leaves us with wardrobes full of pieces that look great in isolation but don’t feel right or get worn.
My advice is to focus on building a wardrobe that works for you rather than constantly adding more. Start with versatile basics that fit your lifestyle and can be styled in multiple ways.
This is also what we focus on in my wardrobe audit and reset programme: understanding what you already own, identifying what’s missing and making more intentional choices.
Can you share a client transformation that had a lasting impact on you and reaffirmed the value of personal styling?
One of the client transformations that has stayed with me was my very first portfolio client. She had spent years in the corporate world and was going through a transition, which made her want a refreshing shift in her style without completely changing who she was.
What made the experience meaningful was realising that personal styling isn’t about creating a completely new version of someone.
We explored her personality, values, lifestyle and what she wanted her clothes to communicate. We then worked with her existing wardrobe while introducing a few new pieces to create more versatility.
We never changed her personal aesthetic; we simply helped it evolve.
Seeing her become more comfortable, open to experimenting and confident in this new version of herself reaffirmed for me that personal styling is really about helping people evolve while still feeling like themselves.
In an era dominated by fast fashion and social media trends, how can individuals build a timeless, versatile and authentic wardrobe?
It can be challenging in an era where fast fashion and social media constantly tell us what’s “in.” But I believe building a great wardrobe isn’t about keeping up; it’s about slowing down and understanding what genuinely works for you.
Start by understanding your lifestyle, preferences, comfort and personal style, and then build around versatile pieces that can work across different occasions.
Don’t rush to buy something simply because it’s trending. A personal stylist can help you make those choices more intentionally, not just by creating versatility in your wardrobe, but by helping you understand and develop a style that is truly your own instead of constantly chasing what’s next.
What challenges have you faced while building your career as a personal stylist, and what key lessons have shaped your journey?
One of my biggest challenges was stepping into styling without coming from a fashion background. After spending over a decade in the corporate world, I often questioned whether I was the right fit to become a personal stylist.
That uncertainty pushed me to pursue a formal certification in personal styling, where I could build the right foundation and understand the technical aspects of styling in greater depth.
The experience helped me realise that being a stylist isn’t about having a certain image, body type or a “perfect” aura. It’s about having the right knowledge, understanding the technicalities and knowing how to apply them to different people.
Working with clients has further taught me that everyone’s needs, preferences and challenges are different.
My biggest lesson has been that building a career in styling is a step-by-step journey. It takes patience, continuous learning and the willingness to keep evolving.
What advice would you give to our readers and aspiring stylists on using personal style as a tool for confidence, personal branding and professional success?
Personal style can be a powerful tool for building confidence, personal branding and professional presence.
When you understand what works for you and feel comfortable in how you present yourself, it can change how you show up and how you carry yourself. Style alone doesn’t define your success, but it can support you in showing up with greater confidence and clarity.
For aspiring stylists, my advice is to invest in the right knowledge and build a strong foundation. Keep learning, stay curious and understand that every client is different.
Personal styling is not about creating a “perfect” image; it’s about understanding people, their individuality and helping them feel confident in who they are.
Ultimately, style should not be about becoming someone else. It should be about becoming a more confident version of yourself.
