Richa Thakker Desai

At BrilliantRead Media, we always strive to bring meaningful and powerful stories from India and around the world to empower and motivate our growing community. As part of this endeavour, we invited Richa Thakker Desai for an exclusive interview with us.

Richa is a seasoned legal expert who practised with one of Mumbai’s top law firms for over a decade before embarking on her entrepreneurial journey. Her transition into entrepreneurship was deeply personal—she founded Benditaa after becoming a mother, inspired by the realisation that what children see and wear can shape their thinking and behaviour from an early age.

She is also a founding member of the Women Leadership Circle, a powerful community that brings together women thought leaders and change-makers to foster growth, collaboration, and impact .

Through Benditaa, Richa is building a meaningful brand that reimagines everyday clothing as a medium for shaping early behaviour—helping nurture a kinder, more empathetic generation by embedding positive and thoughtful messages into what children wear.

Let’s learn more about her inspiring journey, background, and advice for our community!

Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Richa:

What was the defining moment that made you move from corporate law to building Benditaa?

Law has always been my first love, and I continue to believe that being a legal expert enables one to create meaningful impact. However, when I decided to explore the apparel space, every precedent warned me against it. It’s a highly competitive industry with thin margins.

Yet, my instinct told me there was room to build something more purposeful—where apparel could go beyond fashion and become a medium for shaping young minds.

The idea crystallized during the pandemic, when my three-year-old daughter began repeating and remembering the messages printed on her T-shirts. That’s when it struck me—children absorb what they see and wear. That realization became the spark behind Benditaa.

Choosing instinct over precedent turned out to be the right decision. I’ve come to believe that when choices are driven by purpose and heart, they naturally find their path.

Benditaa started with the idea that children absorb messages deeply—how did you translate that into a product-led brand?

We truly believe that “seeing is believing,” especially for children. What they see, hear, and experience shapes their thinking in profound ways.

At Benditaa, we translate this insight into thoughtfully designed apparel that carries positive and empowering messages. Every piece is created to inspire children—to build confidence, optimism, and self-belief each time they wear it.

Our goal is simple yet powerful: to make everyday clothing a vehicle for meaningful reinforcement, helping nurture a kinder and more conscious next generation.

How has motherhood influenced your leadership style and decision-making as a founder?

Motherhood has been one of the most transformative leadership experiences of my life. It reshaped how I understand time, focus, and priorities in a way no formal training ever could.

I often say that motherhood is the most intense management course—it demands multitasking, quick decision-making, empathy, and effective delegation, all at once.

Rather than slowing me down, it expanded my capacity. It strengthened my resilience, sharpened my clarity, and deepened my confidence in handling complexity.

For me, motherhood didn’t pause ambition—it amplified it, opening up new possibilities and reinforcing the connection between personal growth and professional evolution.

In a competitive kids’ wear market, how do you balance purpose-driven messaging with business sustainability?

Numbers are important—they provide direction and discipline—but they don’t always tell the complete story.

When I entered the apparel space, data clearly indicated that it was overcrowded and difficult. However, my instinct—aligned deeply with purpose—told me there was space for a brand centered around meaningful messaging for children.

I believe the best decisions happen at the intersection of data and intuition. Numbers help frame the landscape, but purpose and human judgment illuminate opportunities that data alone cannot capture. That balance continues to guide Benditaa’s growth.

Benditaa challenges gender stereotypes early—how important is it for brands to shape mindsets at a young age?

Early childhood is when beliefs begin to take shape, making it a critical window for influence. At Benditaa, we aim to introduce children—and even parents—to a more positive, inclusive, and empowering way of thinking.

Our designs are created to nurture self-worth, confidence, and optimism from a young age. Messages like “It All Starts With A Dream,” “You Got This,” and “Be Your Own Hero” serve as gentle yet consistent reminders.

We are also deeply committed to challenging traditional gender stereotypes. For girls, we move beyond fairy-tale narratives to encourage independence and ambition through messages like “Believe in Your Dreams” and “Achieve Anything Girl Power.”

For boys, we break the notion that strength excludes sensitivity. Messages like “It’s Cool To Be Kind” reinforce empathy and emotional expression.

Through these small but powerful interventions, we hope to shape more balanced and self-aware individuals.

Coming from a non-business background, what were the biggest learning curves in building Benditaa?

My legal background has been a strong asset—it taught me analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the importance of compliance. These skills translate seamlessly into entrepreneurship, where clarity and precision are critical.

However, my biggest learning curve has been finance. As a lawyer, I had never engaged deeply with profit and loss statements the way a founder must. Initially, I underestimated how crucial it is to understand not just revenue, but also costs, margins, and the small details that impact profitability.

Over time, I made a conscious effort to build financial literacy—studying P&L statements closely and strengthening my understanding of unit economics. This shift has helped me bring greater discipline and long-term sustainability into the business.

What has been your toughest moment as a founder, and how did you navigate through it?

Entrepreneurship constantly tests your mindset, and I’ve realized that as a founder, you must become your own coach every day.

One perspective that has stayed with me is this: your failures are not you, and your successes are not you—they are simply data points guiding your next step.

I also deeply believe that when your purpose is larger than yourself and rooted in genuine impact, things begin to align. That belief has helped me navigate challenges with perspective, resilience, and trust in the journey.

What is the long-term impact you want Benditaa to create in the lives of children and parents?

At Benditaa, we believe that small, consistent actions can create large-scale impact. A single positive message on a child’s T-shirt may seem small, but when multiplied across millions, it becomes a cultural force.

Our vision is to nurture a generation that sees kindness as strength, confidence as natural, and resilience as a way of life. When children are repeatedly exposed to affirming and empowering messages, these values begin to shape how they see themselves and interact with the world.

In a country as young and diverse as India, even subtle daily reinforcements can create meaningful behavioral shifts. For us, apparel is not just clothing—it is a quiet, consistent teacher.

The larger cultural shift we hope to inspire is one where ambition is balanced with empathy, and strength coexists with humanity.
